The Real World Detroit- City Council’s Own Reality Show

9 03 2009

I have been off what happens in Detroit for a while, but I have friends there and they keep me up to date. The latest soap opera, reality show, is not the former major…although he is still in the news; This new instalment is the city council….

I think this is better than a reality show, everyday there is something new, and you can even find the videos on YouTube.

My friends suggested that I should check out the Detroit Free Press and of course I went to the local TV stations websites.

Apparently there is a big controversy, because there is a deal on the works for over a year, that would turn over management on a local convention center to a group formed by the state, a couple of counties close to Detroit and the city of Detroit. The city is currently bankrupt, the last major was trying to sell the tunnel (that goes from the US to Canada) to the Canadians, in order to come close to balancing the budget. They cannot afford the maintenance and renovations needed for the place.

But after a short deliberation the city council voted no for the deal, their reasons…the (white man) racist state wants to take what belongs to us. They said that “they are all racists up  in Lansing” 😦  Are you kidding me? Then the city council president pro-temp, said on camera to a white UW worker that was teling her that the deal would creat jobs, she responded that those worker looked like him, not like her…(they were white not black)

Then the new Major vetoed the council’s vote (the guy she called Shrek when he was the council’s president) She said it was not valid but a  the same time called a meeting to veto the veto… Well in this meeting they were arguing back and forth and then a council member broke out in song (it turned into a musical)

This is what she said:

“European rulers have traditionally taken what they wanted from other people, be they white, be they black or be they brown.

“No one is taking anything,” Collins said of a transfer of Cobo Center to a regional authority, as she and some in the audience began singing “Onward Christian Soldiers.”

Here is a bloger from the detroit news

It was a tragic circus, a festival of ignorance that confirmed the No. 1 obstacle to Detroit’s progress is the bargain basement leaders that city voters elect. The black nationalism that is now the dominant ideology of the council was on proud display, both at the table and in the audience.

Speakers advocating for the deal were taunted by the crowd and cut short by Council President Monica Conyers, who presided over the hearing like an angry bulldog; whites were advised by the citizens to, “Go home.”

Opponents were allowed to rant and ramble on uninterrupted about “those people” who want to steal Detroit’s assets and profit from the city’s labors.

A pitiful Teamster official who practically crawled to the table on his knees expressing profuse respect for this disrespectful body was battered by both the crowd and the council.

When he dared suggest that an improved Cobo Center would create more good-paying jobs for union workers, Conyers reminded him, “Those workers look like you; they don’t look like me.”

Desperate, he invoked President Barack Obama’s message of unity and was angrily warned, “Don’t you say his name here.”

Juxtapose the place and the faces and imagine a white Livonia City Council treating a black union representative with such overt racial hostility. The Justice Department would swoop down like a hawk, and the Rev. Al Sharpton would clog Five Mile Road with protesters.

The current council president is extremely rude and disrespectful to those that do not agree with her. I hope Detroites take a good look a this and make a different choice in the upcoming elections. The current council (most of them are an embarrasment).

The reality show continues….

Any thoughts?

You put it right It is an embarrasment, and the us vs them mentality of separation and mistrust is not going take us anywhere. Most people hear Detroit and think of the whole area, not their narrowmided position of the city limits.
